Notes From the Test Kitchen: The Air Fryer Experiment

Updated: Oct 23, 2021

OK, the only reason we bought an air fryer was because we needed something other than the two burner gas stove top in the new trailer. But it's winter and we're not camping much so, naturally, it ended up in the kitchen.

Experimentation ensued.

I have to conclude that it is a very nifty appliance when you are pressed for time or don't want to heat up a large oven for a small dish, or if you want to use less oil than sautéing or deep frying. Though as soon as I get my new GE Cafe Range, I may have to relegate this to the trailer full-time!

But, as they say, this gadget just encourages people who don't deep fry food to eat French fries. Ok, so we did that three time already 😮. Soooo good.

Bottom line: It's convenient! The primary advantages are speed, versatility and size. I love the rotisserie basket which is great to get things golden brown evenly without constantly stirring in a sauté pan, or deep frying.

Our brand is a little on the noisy side due to the fan, though I haven't heard any others in action so I don't know if that is normal.

Here are some of the experiments:

These crispy parsnip fritters. Sautéeing would have required oil!

Chicken stuffed with Taleggio and wrapped in Prosciutto

This Apple Tart with Frangipane (not quite as pretty as the original!)

The pineapple and the salmon for these tacos

The ciabatta loaf in the foreground. The other two went in the oven

The Ciabatta baked in about half the time as the loaves in the conventional oven!!

These Shishitos

and of course, there are the fries......

Love the rotisserie basket
