Old Fashioned

Recently, I was gifted a beautiful bottle of Penelope Bourbon, crafted especially for me (perhaps?). Such a shame I'm not a Bourbon or Whisky drinker 😟. Clearly I need to make an effort to expand my spirit repertoire!
The Bourbon cocktails on my blog have been lovingly made for my partner and friends, but with my new namesake bottle, I figured now was the time to get on the Bourbon bandwagon.
Let's just say that it may be growing on me, through copious amounts of experimentation!

2oz Bourbon
1 tsp 2:1 Simple Syrup*
2 dashes Bitters**
1-3 Maraschino or Amarena Cherries
Place ingredients into a cocktail mixing glass over ice cubes and stir until cold.
Strain into an Old Fashioned glass over a large ice cube
Peel a strip of orange rind, express the rind over the cocktail, rub the rim of the glass with it, and then place into the drink.
Toss in a cherry or two or three..
* I make my simple syrup with Muscovado sugar, which has a wonderfully unique flavour, but you can use any old brown or white sugar. The 2:1 ratio is by weight, not volume ie 2oz water to 4oz sugar weighed on a scale, not placed in a measuring cup
** The traditional Old Fashioned is made with Angostura Aromatic Bitters, but feel free to use orange, peach, cardamom, chocolate...... There are so many different kinds of exotic bitters out there. Have fund with it.
